Why This New Ford Bronco is Here to Buck the Competition

Are you ready to get a glimpse of the latest in off-road racing? Then fasten your seatbelt because the new Ford Bronco DR is going to take you for one incredible ride. With a beefed up body and an upgraded engine, nothing compares to this beast. Look at how the Ford Bronco ended up being one of the powerful off-road vehicles in production.

Meet Big Oly: Ford’s First Off-Road Race Winning Bronco

The Ford Bronco tore into off-road racing in the late 1960s, after Parnelli Jones, a six time Indy 500 winner, was challenged by Bill Strope, a race truck builder, to compete in the NORRA Mexican 1000 (now renamed Baja 1000). They raced a mostly stock Bronco, and Parnelli literally drove the wheels off on harsh desert terrain. That’s when they upgraded the Ford Bronco to take on the extreme conditions of off-road racing.

In 1969, the world of motorsports welcomed Big Oly. This modified version of the Ford Bronco was powered by a 351 Ford Windsor V8 engine, had a twin-I-beam front suspension, came with a roof that doubled as a wing, and only weighed 2,620 pounds.

Big Oly won first place in both the 1971 and 1972 running of the Baja 1000, and continued to win races until it was retired in 1975. This iconic piece of Ford history was auctioned off for $1.87 million in May 2021.

The New Ford Bronco DR Is Here to Eat the Competition

Ford is ready to take on the Baja 1000 again with the Bronco DR (Desert Racer). With parts pulled from all of Ford’s baddest beasts, there’s no doubt the DR will take the off-road racing world by storm.

It has the Mustang’s 5.0-litre “Coyote” V8 engine, and the same transmission as the F-150. The body and suspension are completely unique to the Bronco DR. Racers can experience 55.1% more front suspension travel and 58.6% more in the rear than the stock Bronco Badlands.

With a full roll cage, the Ford Bronco DR weighs about 6,200 pounds. It sits on 17-inch beadlock wheels with 37 inch BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain tires. It uses stock breaks, but the pads have been upgraded. The DR has a 65-gallon fuel tank and just enough space to accommodate a driver, passenger, and spare tire.

Where Can I Buy the New Ford Bronco DR?

Unfortunately, this beast built for two won’t be available until it premieres in the 2022 Baja 1000, and there will only be 50 available for purchase. You’ll have to dig deep into your bank account because it’s projected to cost at least $200,000.

This modification of the Ford Bronco was in collaboration with Multimatic Motorsports, a long-term partner of Ford Performance. They will manage all sales of the Ford Bronco DR. Talk to your nearest Ford dealership about how to find out more information about purchasing Bronco DR.
